Like many Americans who have not yet had the pleasure of visiting Australia, my own introduction to wine from Down Under was mono-dimensional (to put it gently). Not to name names, but most industry professionals agree that the wild success of a certain colorful animal label crippled the broader category of Australian wine imports to the United States. Sadly, we just can’t kick the perception that wine from this part of the world should cost no more than $6.99.
As a result, the heterogeneity of Australian soil types, microclimates, and grape varieties is woefully under-represented in much of the export market. In fact, none of the wines in this edition are widely available here in San Diego, and I’d like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to the importers who went out of their way to help assemble this truly unprecedented collection of wines. Without Vine Street Imports (in New Jersey) and Hudson Wine Brokers (in Los Angeles), this would not have been possible.
Ray Ferrer’s painting for this edition, appropriately titled Oz, hits the nail right on the head. It’s an honor to collaborate with Ray, whose use of spray paint on canvas is entirely unique. There’s still one more of Ray’s pieces to come next month, and in the meantime, be sure to check out his website, urbanwallart.wordpress.com.
The diversity expressed by the six bottles in this volume will shatter your preconceptions about Australian wine. The country covers an entire continent, after all, and one with a vibrant culture for both wine production and consumption. It shouldn’t be so surprising that such a wide assortment of styles and varieties are produced. But it was quite a journey to sample and select these bottles, and I can’t wait for you to share in the adventure. I do hope that you’ll share some of your thoughts with me.
